School Shield

Magdalen's Junior School is situated in School House, on the corner of the Plain, close to the middle of Oxford and easily accessible by bus, train, bicycle and car. The large, handsome, Victorian building is easily distinguished by its beautiful rose gardens and white 'Chinese' bridges across the River Cherwell. Here, boys are taught by trained Junior School teachers in bright, spacious classrooms with access to specialist teaching rooms both in the Junior School and in the Senior School which is situated on the other side of Cowley Place.

Class sizes are small and so the MCS Junior School is highly regarded by parents who prefer their children to be taught in small classes where, in an intimate and friendly atmosphere, each boy has the advantage of plenty of personal attention from his teachers. Each of the Junior classes is taught by its own Form Tutor as well as specialist teachers in English, Maths, Music, Games, French and Science.

There is a class of about 18 boys in J1 and J2 (Years 3 and 4); we then divide the year in two, allowing for a further entry at 9+. In J3 and J4 (Years 5 and 6) we have two classes, each of about 16-18 boys.

Traditional values of academic excellence, learning and scholarship remain extremely strong, but there is a lightness of touch, too, and a degree of personal attention from staff which enables boys to settle in quickly and to enjoy the feeling not only of rising to new challenges, but of being seen to have done so! Such challenges are not restricted to the classroom: music, sport, clubs and activities are all thriving and help boys to make friends quickly on their arrival.

Boys are encouraged to think for themselves, to develop and understanding of others, and to recognise both the advantages and the responsibilities of working together in a community.
