Admissions at 7+ and 9+

Admissions at 7+ and 9+ follow tests usually held in January preceding September entry.

Further details of the tests are available on application, but at both levels they include assessment of English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Most 9+ candidates will be called for interview and most 7+ candidates will be called for a part-day of observation lessons held at MCS and including a relatively informal interview. By paying close attention to all aspects of our tests, including the current Headteacher's report, we believe that we are successful in looking for promise and potential - not simply attainment 'to date'. We naturally do all we can to make the entrance examination experience as friendly and good-natured as possible - for boys and their parents!

Choristerships

Magdalen College has sixteen boy choristers who are educated at Magdalen College School. Chorister Voice Trials are usually held in October and February and are advertised in the local press and outside Magdalen College chapel. All choristers benefit from very generous fee remission.

Further details are available from The College Secretary, Magdalen College, Oxford OX1 4AU, or from the school.

Additional Information

UNIFORM

Boys in the Junior School wear the Junior School jersey, school tie, white or blue shirt, grey flannel trousers and black shoes. A jacket is optional.

FEES

MCS fees are among the lowest of comparable schools both in this area and further afield and we are aware of the importance of this in preserving the particularly happy mix of boys who go on, in many cases, to achieve great distinction in their later lives. For up to date fee details, please contact the school.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

Scholarships are awarded to internal candidates at the age of 13 after a competitive examination, but we are able to offer a limited number of Governors' Bursaries to boys of any age depending on family income. Details of these may be obtained from the school or by speaking directly to the Registrar.

VISITS

The Master of Magdalen College School is always pleased to meet prospective parents. Parents who wish to visit the school to meet the Master and have a tour of the Junior and Senior Schools, conducted by a Prefect, should contact the Registrar. Children are welcome, of course.

THE SCHOOL DAY

School starts at 8:30 am and finishes at 3:25 pm (3:40 pm on Fridays for boys in Years 5 and 6). For all boys in the Junior School, the day ends with a reading session. There are no longer any lessons on Saturdays at Magdalen College School, although there is a wide range of sports and other activities throughout the school at weekends.

AFTER-SCHOOL CARE

An after-school care club takes place each afternoon until 5:30 pm.
